ExCELL's Coaching 

ExCELL offers custom coaching to meet the needs of each grade level and school district.   

​ExCELL Literacy Coaches in Preschool 

Systematic coaching is provided to participating early childhood educators.  Coaching sessions focus on the latest research-based early literacy and family literacy approaches to enhance classroom and home literacy environments and teaching practices. Educators attend a monthly PD workshop focused on enhancing early language and literacy instructional practices, improving the quality of teacher-child interactions and supporting families in helping their children develop critical early literacy skills. Additionally, ExCELL's preschool literacy coaches work with educators in individualized coaching sessions each month. Using a combination of reflection, co-teaching, co-planning, and modeling, coaches support teacher implementation of effective evidenced-based early language and literacy strategies. Coaching is linked directly to ongoing classroom and child level assessments.

ExCELL Literacy Coaches in Elementary Schools (K-2) 

As thought partners for teachers, ExCELL’s Literacy Coaches are licensed Reading Specialists who work in partnership with Richmond Public Schools principals, literacy coaches and interventionists to support teachers in the Science of Reading practices.  We support district initiatives, such as UFLI and EL Module, in classrooms through modeling, teacher feedback and planning.  Instructional classroom materials are provided for all participating classrooms (i.e. hands on games that reinforce phonics skills and decodable books). The ExCELL literacy coaches have extensive experience supporting new teachers in partnership with selective schools.  Teacher support includes monthly teacher meetings, monthly in-class observations, and checklists.

ExCELL's Professional Development 

ExCELL offers several different professional development options (ranging from full-year programs to one-time sessions) for educators throughout Virginia.   

ExCELL Comprehensive 

The full ExCELL program includes:
1.) monthly professional development sessions and classroom-based coaching; 2.) high quality instructional materials and children's books; 3.) family literacy events and home literacy materials; and 4.) a comprehensive, multi-level evaluation. 

ExCELL Spotlight

PD providers partner with school districts to identify their goals and develop a customized learning plan. ExCELL Spotlight offers stand-alone professional development sessions that can be selected in any order based on the need(s) or interest(s) of the school districts and/or schools. 

ExCELL’s Ocean Adventures
ExCELL Ocean Adventures is a professional development offering that provides guidance to school administrators in the design and implementation of a language and literacy-focused kindergarten summer transition program.
